Fullhurst Community College

Physical Education

PE encourages students to learn about themselves, their capabilities, their potential and their limitations. It is the foundation of all sport participation because it goes further than the individual and their understanding of themselves - it also teaches students how to work with and respect others. Above all, it should be a source of fun and enjoyment that introduces students to the different roles in sport. As well as providing grass roots sport with inter-form events, Fullhurst also aims to excel and targets the top of the sporting pyramid. We have numerous representatives in a variety of sports at school, county, national and international level.

In order to promote high standards, the Physical Education department’s aim is to extend pupils’ use of basic skills needed in a wider range of sporting events that cover many different areas. It is within the context of engaging in physical activities that pupils develop creative responses (expressing), critical appreciation (evaluating) and interpersonal skills. Links between what is studied at Key Stages 3 and 4 are explicitly made so that students build on what they already know when acquiring new knowledge.

Key Stage 3

Our curriculum sees students participating in a broad range of dynamic and high-quality activities.  Students are given the opportunity to become increasingly skillful and intelligent performers, acquiring and developing skills and learning how to select and apply skills and basic tactics. Students experience a range of sports and activities, including; basketball, table tennis, trampolining, gymnastics and rugby to name just a few!

Key Stage 4

At KS4 all students continue to access two hours of PE per week as part of their core provision. Within these hours pupils have one theory lesson where they work towards a BTEC Level 2 Sports qualification, as well as one practical lesson. The BTEC course is 75% coursework and 25% examination.

Extra-curricular information

Members of the Physical Education department contribute to the college’s diverse programme of extracurricular activities by providing comprehensive extracurricular provision, during the lunch hour, after school and through representing the school in a range of competitive individual and team sports.  The range of sports activities on offer this term can be viewed on the Extra-curricular Activities page.
