Year 7 and 8 visit Loughborough University

On Wednesday 7 January, 16 of our year 8 students attended the event ‘Where can Maths and English take me?’ at Loughborough University.

The event was created by Loughborough, Leicester and De Montfort Universities and included activities focusing on Maths and English skills and how these are used every day in lots of different areas.  Six schools from around the city attended and the students worked extremely well with other students as well as with the staff and student ambassadors from the Universities.

Activities included students creating a home-made air powered rocket, using different degree angles and a trial and error process to measure how far they could get the rocket to fly.  They also learnt all about the history of maps and used their mathematics skills to work together and scale a room and find different objects as well as developing their communication and creativity to create their own life maps.  Lastly, the students had to use communication and algebraic methods to find out who stole fish from a school fish tank.  Using their X, Y and Z’s and analysing shop receipts, the students all worked together to research, write and present their findings.

The day was a huge success and students were an absolute credit to the school.  Each student will also be presented with a certificate for their attendance to the event which have been provided by the University.
