Child Development

Curriculum Intent

This is a legacy course which now only runs in year 11.

To gain essential knowledge to apply the fundamental principles and concepts of Child Development, learn practical skills relating to real- life contexts and develop independence and confidence within the childcare sector.’

During this qualification students are taught a variety of skills; ranging from how to prevent injuries to children and how children develop from conception to five years of age. Completing this OCR Cambridge National Level 2 in Child Development will offer students the opportunity to progress onto a Level 3 course

This qualification consists of three units. Each NEA unit equivalates to 30% of the overall grade with a written assessment of 40%.

Year 11

At the beginning of year 11 students will still be working towards completing their NEA R059 unit

NEA R059 – This unit is focussed on the development of a child from one to five years. Involving students looking at children’s physical, intellectual and social development, and children’s play.  Students will also learn about how to carry out observations of children’s development and how to provide a good play activity to promote the child’s development.

Written Assessment R057 – This unit focuses on students learning about health and well-being.  Students will learn about the importance of being healthy before and during pregnancy, and creating conditions in which a child can thrive.  They will also learn how to prevent and manage childhood illnesses and how to create a safe environment.
