Fullhurst Community College

GCSE Options (2021)

Students, parents and carers,

This page contains important information regarding the subjects you will be studying during both Year 10 and 11 at Fullhurst. Please make sure that you have our Fullhurst app downloaded as you will need to use this to make option choices.

As you move from Year 9 into 10, you are given the opportunity to make decisions about some of the courses they want to study and this booklet has been put together to support this process. We recommend this is used in alongside discussions with school staff and at home, considering future pathways and career choices.

CLICK HERE TO OPEN OUR OPTIONS BOOKLET.

Important Information and Key Terms

Throughout this process, there is information about the different KS4 subjects that are on offer at Fullhurst.

Within this process there are some important dates:

  • Thursday 11th March: Deadline for returning provisional option forms to tutors.
  • Week beginning Monday 1 st March: Parent/Teacher Virtual Meetings.
  • Thursday 4th March: Twitter Live Evening (@Fullhurst) 5pm-7pm.
  • Friday 5th March: Options Form available through Fullhurst Parent App.

Certain terms are used throughout:

Core Subjects - The subjects that all students study. Option Subjects The courses that students can choose to study in years 10 and 11.

EBacc - These are the subjects that the government consider to be in the English Baccalaureate. We recommend that every student studies at least one of these subjects and you can pick more than one of these as often they complement each other.

Technical Award - These are GCSE equivalent courses. They are more work based and as such have a higher weighting given to the work you do throughout the course, although they all have exams.

  • All students will study the mandatory PE lessons with the opportunity to gain a BTEC Sport qualification.
  • All students at KS4 will study the core subjects of Maths, English Language, English Literature, Science, PE and PSHE.

Alongside this we want students to pick three other options and a further reserve, as due to timetabling constraints it is not always possible to give students their first choices, although every effort will be done to make this possible.

Within these three option subjects all students should pick one Ebacc subject (History, Geography, French, Spanish or Computer Science). After this we recommend students then choose the subjects which are going to allow them to be as successful as possible in the future.

Some subjects have entry requirements. These are Computer Science, GCSE Physical Education and Triple Award Science. With these subjects we offer alternate courses that may be more appropriate such as Information Technology, BTEC PE and Double Award Science. Students should not pick both this course and the alternative option (i.e. Computer Science and Information Technology should not be chosen). If you are considering any of these courses please discuss this with the relevant member of staff.

Informed by their wide reading, students will also practice writing in a range of different styles, focusing on crafting language for deliberate effect. Alongside this, students will also study a variety of whole literary texts, including a Shakespeare play

Maths

In Mathematics students will follow a linear route, with all students taking their GCSE examinations at the end of the course. The course covers:

  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Ratio, Proportion and Change
  • Geometry and Measures
  • Probability
  • Statistics

Exam board AQA

The course is assessed with 3 written papers at the end of the course at both Higher (Grades 4-9) and Foundation Tier (Grades 1-5).

All 3 papers are 1 hour 30 minutes long for both tiers.  Paper 1 is a non-calculator paper, paper 2 and 3 are calculator papers.  The questions are in a mix of styles, from short, single-mark questions to multi-step problems. The mathematical demand increases as a student progresses through the paper.

Science

In Science 2 different pathways are offered:

Trilogy Combined Science: All students, unless they opt for the triple award path below, will follow this route.  Students studying Combined Science will cover the three science disciplines, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students will develop their KS3 skills and will be taught using a variety of ways including practical work, research and independent learning.  They learn fundamental topics in science such as cell biology, atomic structure and energy. Students are prepared not only so they can pursue a level 3 qualification in science, but also so they can understand and appreciate the relevance of science in their lives and how the three disciplines interact.

Trilogy Triple Award Science: If students opt for triple award science (this as one of your 3 options) and are considered able to achieve on this route, they will study Biology, Chemistry and Physics GCSEs. Triple Award Science enriches and extends students understanding of science. Students are taught the three disciplines through practical work, research and independent learning.

  • Citizenship & Religious Education
  • Finance and Careers & Enterprise
  • Citizenship
