GCSE Options 2026

Students, parents and carers,

This page contains important information regarding the subjects you will be studying during both Year 10 and 11 at Fullhurst. Please make sure that parents have our Fullhurst app downloaded as they will need to use this to confirm option choices.

As you move from Year 9 into 10, you are given the opportunity to make decisions about some of the courses they want to study and this booklet has been put together to support this process. We recommend this is used in alongside discussions with school staff and at home, considering future pathways and career choices.

Important Information and Key Terms

Throughout this process, there is information about the different KS4 subjects that are on offer at Fullhurst.

Within this process there are some important dates:

  • Thursday 5th February 2026: Parents Evening and Options Event
  • Friday 13th March 2026: Students to select their option choices.
  • Thursday 19th March 2026: Deadline for parental approval of student options choices on the Fullhurst App.

Certain terms are used throughout:

Core Subjects - The subjects that all students study.

Option Subjects - The courses that students can choose to study in years 10 and 11.

EBacc - These are the subjects that the government consider to be in the English Baccalaureate. We recommend that every student studies at least one of these subjects and you can pick more than one of these as often they complement each other.

Technical Award - These are GCSE equivalent courses. They are more work based and as such have a higher weighting given to the work you do throughout the course, although they all have exams.

  • All students will study the mandatory PE lessons with the opportunity to gain a BTEC Sport qualification unless they chose to study the GCSE PE.
  • All students at KS4 will study the core subjects of Maths, English Language, English Literature, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, PE and PSHE.

Alongside this we want students to pick three other options and a further reserve, as due to timetabling constraints it is not always possible to give students their first choices, although every effort will be done to make this possible.

Within these three option subjects all students should pick one Ebacc subject (History, Geography, French, Spanish or Computer Science). After this we recommend students then choose the subjects which are going to allow them to be as successful as possible in the future.

Computer Science has an entry requirement as due to the challenging nature of this course. If you are considering studying Computer Science please discuss this with the relevant member of staff.

Students will complete a themed project ‘portraits’, a broad topic that allows for personalisation and explores a range of artistic media and processes. Students will study a range of work by both traditional and contemporary artists, such as photorealist artist Chuck Close, abstract street artist Dean Russo. Following on with mixed media work by Deb Weiers and wire sculptures by Alexander Calder. Having studied these artists, students will explore drawing, mixed media collage and wire sculptures inspired by the artists studied, producing their own personal outcomes based on the artists’ work. Teaching and learning is planned to build on processes learnt during years 7 and 8 and will develop students’ independence as artists, in preparation for further study at GCSE level.

CNAT GCSE Sports Science

Cambridge National in Sport Science

Studying CNAT Sport Science will encourage you to think for yourself about the scientific world of sport whilst putting these theories and concepts into practice in both theoretical and practical sport situations. This will link with careers in sport and allow you to gain a science-basis for your study of sport. You will learn about the science of training and training principles, the importance of diet and nutrition for sports performance and ways of recognising, responding to and treating injuries and medical conditions.

ASSESSMENT:

You will be assessed by an exam and controlled assessments within lessons.

The exam is based on unit R180: Reducing the risk of sports injuries and dealing with common medical conditions.  This exam will be sat at the end of year 11 and be worth 40%.

The controlled assessments are:

R181: Applying the principles of training: fitness and how it affects skill performance. This is assessed by a set assignment.

You will take on the role of a ‘Sports Coach’ and there are a number of tasks designed around keeping your athletes in peak condition, based on fitness tests and analysis of the results of such tests.

R183: Nutrition and sports performance. This is assessed by a set assignment.

You will learn to consider the composition of a healthy, balanced diet, the necessity of certain nutrients in particular quantities and the effects of a poor diet on performance. You will use this knowledge to produce an appropriate, effective nutrition plan for a performer.

You can continue your sport science studies at colleges such as WQE or Loughborough College, and beyond (with Loughborough University offering Degree courses).

You may wish to study A Level PE or Cambridge Technical in Sport and Physical Activity.

Sports Science will open the door to lots of exciting careers including:

  • Sports coach
  • Fitness instructor
  • PE teacher
  • Sports nutritionist
  • Physiotherapist
