Year 7 literacy and numeracy catch-up premium

This fund has now been discontinued, with last payments being for the 2019 to 2020 academic year.

The Literacy and Numeracy Catch-Up Premium gives schools additional funding to support Year 7 students who did not achieve the expected standard in literacy or numeracy at the end of Key Stage 2 (KS2). The intention is that this funding accelerates the progress of these pupils, to allow their attainment in literacy and or numeracy to improve.

2019 - 20

In 2019-20 Fullhurst received a total of £31,369 for eligible students. Spending of this funding has been allocated based on strategies which have proven to be successful in the past. The funding is being spent to facilitate intervention in the following ways:

  • A specialist primary trained teacher
  • A specialist Level 3 teaching assistant
  • Increased small group support for students in literacy and numeracy.
  • Extra English and or  Maths curriculum time.
  • All students accessed reading, spelling and maths baseline assessments.
  • Increased transition activities (for example, communication with feeder primary schools, Fullhurst teachers working with feeder primary teachers, induction activities).

Reading

115 students on entry were not at the expected standard (HTM) for reading. This was supported in a variety of ways including intervention, educational testing, access to additional English lessons and adult support, small group and individual sessions, with reading homework booklets to support access to reading throughout the academic year. 33 students were identified as a target cohort for support.

  • 6 of 33 students made at least expected progress in English in year 7.
  • 25 of 33 made better than expected progress in English in year 7, and therefore relatively caught up with their peers.
  • Where progress was below what was expected, further assessment and intervention were put into place.

19 out of the 115  students were taught in the nurture English classes in year seven, and therefore had additional curriculum time for English. In this class 84% of students had a good or outstanding attitude to learning. 38% of this class had no KS2 baseline results, yet 100% achieved a grade in their first assessment data.
